The facade

Vertical white precast concrete fins run across both storeys. They stand in a fixed rhythm in front of the facade and step in depth, so that the volume reads sharply in daylight and dissolves at dusk into the light coming from within. Between the fins the windows are kept tall and narrow; below them the ground-floor glazing runs horizontally through.

The atrium

Inside, the building opens into a single tall hall. A long rooflight, carried on timber beams, brings daylight all the way down to the ground floor. The upper gallery looks into that space, so both levels can see one another. The stair hangs in the hall on open treads and connects the floors without dividing them.

The garden side

On the garden side two wings step forward, and between them a wide flight of steps climbs to the link behind. It bridges the level change and doubles as seating. That link is glazed over its full height, so the outdoor space carries visually through into the building.
